Journalists use of social media:

Twitter is the most popular social media with Journalists, usually if they have Instagram it’s purely for sharing personal photos, not promoting their work. However, on Twitter journalists tend to exclusively tweet about things relating to the genre of their writing, so it’s much more professionally tailored.

They do this by following the trends and discussions that come from their specific genres, and then adding their own contributions to these conversations. Their contributions could be in the form of a short tweet with an opinion, a longer thread on the subject, or a link to a related article.

Journalists also tend to include their bylines in their Twitter bios so that new followers can easily find their work, as well as this they will include their email address so potential employers can contact them directly.

Aside from contributions to relevant conversations, the main thing journalists will post to Twitter is tweets with links to their own articles, or retweets of their article from the publications twitter.
